But I do think the legal issues that could crop up would overrule that. It would be difficult to support a sport that could potentially bankrupt an entire community, no matter how much you love it.

Seriously, I just spent three years living in West Cornburg, Ill. (population 26,000), and in all my time there, I never once saw anyone playing soccer. Baseball and football aplenty, but no soccer. In fact, I’m not sure I even saw soccer goalposts on a field in a public park. If I did, they weren’t being used for that purpose.

Also, I predict with absolute confidence that if doctors’ warnings of brain injury reach a critical mass, rural residents will spurn the doctors before they’ll spurn football.

As for what constitutes an urban sport, the quintessential urban sport is basketball. If you’ve got a patch of concrete — and most cities do — all you need to add is a hoop. If you haven’t got two, one will do.

Not the CTE link. That is unfortunate and terrible, but they are hitting each other pretty darn hard. I’m surprised it has taken this long for folks to figure it all out.

What I think is silly is it will cause a migration from rural to urban. I know that is the trend, but I just don’t see the demise of football adding all that much to it. Why wouldn’t soccer easily fill the void?
